I used to hate Panther #8, you know the one I'm talking about. The classic one, with the little bits of clawed flesh near the paws. I would always thing why would someone get that image on them. Don't they have any originality? Don't they want to be different?
Now after a few years of seriously collecting tattoo's and having already marked myself with "trendy tribal", I've learned to love flash.
Why?
Flash has history.
Lets take panther #8 up there, comes from Minute Myths and Legends illustrated by Marie Shubert published in 1939 and made famous by tattooer Amund Deitzel . That is enough history for me, enouph to say I have some Deitzel flash.
Tattoo Flash is a test of the sublties of an artists skill. In my opinion an image where many people can kind of do it but only few can make it "pop" is a real test of artistic skill.
here are some samples you can compare them yourself at Rank My Tattoos, and BmeZine
Oh I can go on and on about different pieces, Like the Rose of No Mans Land , or the Rock of Ages, but I'll stop because my boss wants her TPS report by noon.
